That is when we went on vacation. We had good time, but when I got back to work. Whoa… strap on the seat belt and hang on. April began with me leaving for San Antonio over the Easter weekend and Katie going to Vegas with a couple of her friends. She had a good time. I was working and it was extremely humid and raining in San Antonio. Well, so April and May blew by. I think I was busy at work. I can’t say that I really remember. June started with a short trip to visit Katie’s mom in Utah. During the trip we found out that my little sister, Anna, was hospitalized with shortness of breath and that an x-ray has indicated that there was a mass in her chest. Since Anna was in Italy she had to travel to Germany to have a CT scan and a biopsy to determine the true size of the mass and what it truly was. Anna went home (Italy) for a while and returned to Germany in the middle of July to start her chemo-therapy.

Meanwhile in Long Beach… At some point in May, Katie had thrown out her back. She had muddled through the end of May and made the trip to Utah, but when she got back she was in a bit of pain. She stayed home from work for a while on bed rest to let her back heal. She went back and forth to work, and ended up home on bed rest for Independence Day. I went back to work on the 5th of July, Katie ended up in the hospital. She had ruptured a disc in her lower back. After a few weeks in the hospital, Katie underwent surgery on July 26. The surgery was a success and Katie is recovering quickly.

Mom left for Germany on July 22 to take care of Anna. Mom is returning on Wednesday, Anna is arriving from Germany with Dorian and Wayne on Thursday. Dad is arriving from New Jersey on Thursday as well. Why is everyone convening in Southern California? My little brother, Ben, is getting married on Aug 26!

What has really happened is that the Cult of Terror has won. People are now so scared that random, should-be-funny events are taken totally out of context. This is not the America that I grew up in. I mean, I grew up in a not-the-best sort of neighborhood with sirens wailing at any and all hours of the day, and I never thought that it was possible for our society to become comfortable with this level of fear.

I spent a summer in Israel when I was 16. I suppose that this was during a lull in the first Intifada. The Israelis had already become used the climate of terror that had infested Israel. The bomb squad came in and “disposed” of a suspicious package more than once in the time that I was there. Soldiers walked around the streets and took trips on buses with rifles in their hands. In reality, I never felt safer in my life - because this was not an abnormal experience in Israel.

But that was Israel, not the United States of America. It will take many years of living in this climate of fear and terror for us to become used to it. But the question to me is, when that happens how many of our liberties and rights have to be surrendered? Another question would be will the new America resemble the one I grew up in?

• Leave work at work - We all have to work from home sometimes, but leave the stress and hurriedness of work in the office. If you must work from home, do it in a separate place from where you live. Make sure that you have a dedicated space so people know you are working and not to disturb you.
• Sleep in on the weekends - Unless you have to go into the office that is…
• Do something good for the soul - Go for a hike, a walk on the beach, to the gym, visit a museum, see a concert or a play… get the picture?
• Take a vacation - Make sure you leave the blackberry and cell phones at home, try not to take a computer too.

This is really a reminder to myself. Take it for what it is worth.
